Stone Oak Ladies Business Association Breakfast Meeting: Passing Down Old Family Wisdom
April 2020
The monthly breakfast meeting at Perico’s had an air of focus.
Women came through to network, give out gifts, and speak on behalf of their businesses or companies. Jennifer Scroggins of the financial advising company Platinum Wealth Solutions was the host of the event, speaking on the topic of family, food, trust, and one’s amenity with money. After building upon a sweet metaphor for the comfort of money by comparing it to a recipe for her grandmother’s buttermilk pie, she emphasized “…there is some value in talking about that comfort that hopefully we can provide for you from the money issues that we all face.” She also said that confusion or unease did not have to be a factor in our lives when it comes to money, citing passion, trust, integrity, knowledge and commitment as key ingredients to a fruitful relationship with our finances. She continued, honing in on her company’s role in that peace of mind by saying, “it truly is about building a relationship with comfort just like food. What you want to do is surround yourself with people that you trust.”
Crista Branch of Branch Family Law firm spoke on a similar wavelength—explaining that her law firm “preserve[s] families and preserve[s] assets” and that her firm puts “clients first, and…are very family forward”—touching on aspects of law that her company covers like pre-marital agreements and wills. To drive the point home, she spoke on her small firm (7 employees) that has one male employee—he is a single parent, thus understands family just as viscerally as his clients do, making him a perfect fit for both the firm and the clients within it.
After the presentations and questions, gifts were drawn—through the pile surfaced an Instapot, a $20 Target gift card, a fuzzy blanket, and self-care products like lotions, bath bombs, and face masks. The women chatted, exchanged cards, stories, and business information over tacos and coffee with both new members and old. As always with a room full of only women, the meeting felt safe, warm, and unceremonious, with the ladies intent on making real connections, whether it be for networking or personal reasons. Sharing sacred family recipes will do that to you.
